Steeple Aston Annual Quiz Night 2026 – report by Barbara Brewer

Once again, the Village Hall Committee organised a thoroughly enjoyable Quiz evening on Saturday 17th
January. This year, twelve teams took part in the fun, with names ranging from ‘BWN crew’ to ‘The
Racqueteers’. Perhaps next year, there should be a prize for the most creative team name?
As usual, the teams went to town providing a wide and interesting variety of food and nibbles to keep
them going during the evening, which proved to be vibrant, filled with laughter, camaraderie and spirited
competition. A bar was also available to serve liquid refreshments to all. Thanks go to Debbie, Amy and
John for running the bar.

This year the quiz was devised and led by Carl Tomlinson with Ian Hart in charge of the questions and the
score board. Questions and conundrums challenging the teams included:

If my true love went shopping for the gifts in ‘the twelve days of Christmas’, which one gift would they
have to import if acquiring the gifts in December in the UK?
Answer: Turtle Doves are migratory and would be in West Africa at the time.

What is the last word in the titles of Bob Dylan’s 6th studio album and Evelyn Waugh’s 7th novel?
Answer: Revisited.

As usual the evening was rounded off with the presentation of the trophy and wine to the winning team
‘Quizical’ – with a score of 66. Congratulations! Photograph of the winning team appeared in the February
SAL.

The Village Hall Committee gratefully received donations of generous raffle prizes from The Yurt,
(Nicholson’s), Holt Hotel, Holt Garage, (PTA), RHS gift bags, bottle of sherry (Merrill) and wine
(anonymous). Thanks go to all who participated, not forgetting the Village Hall committee who organised
this event.

Saturday 25th April will be our first Murder Mystery Evening Dinner, detecting and a dead body. More details to follow next month, but do check out the poster in this month’s SAL. We expect tickets to sell

Other news …. The fine detail of the new hiring charges and hiring agreement will be published next
